[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] Yonsei University Gangnam Severance Hospital is accelerating the construction of a new hospital with a target completion year of 2029.
On the 29th, Gangnam Severance Hospital announced on the 30th that it had signed a design service contract for the new hospital construction with Heerim Architects & Engineers. The signing ceremony was attended by hospital officials including Director Song Young-gu, who is also head of the New Hospital Promotion Headquarters, and Deputy Director of Medical Affairs Lee Woo-seok, as well as Heerim CEO Jung Young-gyun and Vice President Heo Eun-young.
Heerim participated in the design of the new hospital commissioned by Gangnam Severance Hospital as part of a consortium with the American firm Perkins Eastman. According to the contract, the design for a total area of 216,500㎡ will be carried out by August 2023. Heerim plans to incorporate advanced medical facilities that exceed current medical law standards and enhanced medical environments to respond to large-scale infectious disease outbreaks in the design.
The new Gangnam Severance Hospital will be built on the site of the current hospital. In August last year, Gangnam Severance Hospital received approval from the Seoul Metropolitan Government for the 'District Unit Planning Zone and Plan Decision,' initiating the new hospital construction project. The hospital aims to open in 2029 through phased construction while maintaining existing medical facilities.

Director Song Young-gu said, “I feel very reassured and excited to officially start the construction of the new hospital, which embodies the hopes of hospital staff and local residents, together with Heerim Architects, the top architectural design experts in Korea. We will do our best to achieve the construction goal 'Beyond the Best,' meaning a hospital beyond the best, so that Korea’s highest level of medical services can be provided in a patient-centered, comfortable, and safe environment.”
Heerim CEO Jung Young-gyun also said, “Since the design work must be carried out while operating the existing hospital and implementing phased construction, it will be very difficult and complex, but we will devote all our capabilities to the design work to ensure that patients and guardians visiting the hospital during the construction phase do not experience any inconvenience.”
