Seoul City Council Vice Chairman Kang Dong-gil Launches Full-Scale Development of 'Seoul Fashion (Seongbuk) Smart Center'

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Kang Dong-gil, Vice Chairman of the Planning and Economy Committee of the Seoul Metropolitan Council (Democratic Party, Seongbuk 3), visited the 'Seoul Fashion Smart Center' located in Geumcheon-gu on the 28th to inspect the site and listen to opinions from officials at the Geumcheon Center.

The site visit was attended by Vice Chairman Kang, Oh Jung-kyun, a member of the Seongbuk District Council, Oh Byung-yeol, President of the Seoul Fashion Textile and Sewing Association, Je Hae-gi, Director of the Seongbuk Small Business Specialized Support Center, and staff from the Seongbuk District Job Economy Division.

Currently, there are 1,828 sewing companies operating in Seongbuk and Gangbuk, and 1,324 in Jungnang, but most sewing companies located in Seongbuk are small businesses with fewer than five employees, facing many difficulties in introducing expensive advanced equipment such as automatic cutting machines and in training specialized personnel.

To resolve these difficulties, Vice Chairman Kang reflected a budget of 1.5 billion KRW for the 'Seoul Fashion (Seongbuk) Smart Center' project in the Seoul city budget for 2021.

The site visit was intended to benchmark the advantages of the Geumcheon Center, which was completed and has been operating since last year, and to identify inconveniences ahead of the establishment of the 'Seoul Fashion (Seongbuk) Smart Center.'

Vice Chairman Kang Dong-gil stated, “The Seoul Fashion (Seongbuk) Smart Center must be established within this year to alleviate the difficulties of the underprivileged fashion and sewing industry in Seongbuk-gu and to promote the revitalization of the local economy,” and added, “Please proceed with sufficient consultation with the Seongbuk Small Business Support Center and the district office to reflect the characteristics of Seongbuk-gu for successful establishment and operation.”

Meanwhile, the Geumcheon Center is a facility directly managed by Seoul City that provides free services to small fashion sewing businesses, including ▲smart solutions (automatic cutting room, shared equipment) ▲youth entrepreneurship (education and space support, distribution linkage) ▲community collaboration (factory, school, distribution cooperation).
