Opposition: "Constitutional Court Dismisses Constitutional Complaint on Corruption Investigation Office Act, Suspected of Bowing to Regime Pressure"

[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] On the 29th, the People Power Party pointed out that "there is suspicion that the Constitutional Court is catering to the regime rather than the people" in relation to the dismissal of the constitutional complaint challenging the constitutionality of the 'Act on the Establishment and Operation of the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit.'

Kim Ye-ryeong, spokesperson for the People Power Party, said on the same day, "In January, the Constitutional Court ruled the establishment and operation law of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) constitutional, and today it also dismissed the case regarding the amendment to the CIO law that nullified the opposition party's veto power," expressing criticism.

Regarding the amendment passed solely by the ruling party, Spokesperson Kim introduced, "'Guaranteeing the opposition party's veto power' was the only justification the government and ruling party used to legitimize their actions before the people while pushing the fast-track process. However, when things did not go as planned, they forcibly passed the amendment lowering the quorum from 6 to 5 members without bipartisan agreement."

He continued, "Not only did they create the all-powerful monster CIO, but they also engage in parliamentary dictatorship with the power given by the people, ignoring opposing opinions and arbitrarily rewriting laws. If this is not an infringement on popular sovereignty and parliamentary democracy, then what is it?" He added, "Regardless of the Constitutional Court's judgment, it is doubtful whether the people can truly trust that decision."
