What Is the Secret Behind Dongdaemun-gu's Consecutive Selections for Non-Face-to-Face Reading Activity Support Contests? Residents are using production facilities at the Dongdaemun-gu Informatization Library Media Creation Support Center.

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor You Deok-yeol) has been consecutively selected for three public contest projects that will lead the revitalization of local reading culture, starting various reading culture projects this year.

The selected projects this time are ▲Support for community activities in local libraries (Hwikyung Children's Library) ▲Support for smart-based K-Library (Dapsimni Library) ▲Library service support center for knowledge and information vulnerable groups (Informatization Library).

The ‘Support for community activities in local libraries’ was first launched by Seoul City this year to support non-face-to-face reading club activities necessary in the post-COVID-19 era and to make libraries a hub for resident communication.

Hwikyung Children's Library was selected by directly listening to and reflecting the opinions of children and parents who visit the library, planning a non-face-to-face picture book reading program, and proposing various activities to socially spread reading in cooperation with small libraries.

This project was selected in only two autonomous districts in Seoul, each receiving 25 million KRW in city funds per district.

Dongdaemun-gu Dapsimni Library was selected for the ‘Smart-based K-Library Construction Support’ project and plans to expand digital-based library services.

The smart-based K-Library construction is a project led by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (with 22 million KRW in national funding) to create a digital creative space within public libraries where citizens can freely shoot and edit videos.

Especially with the advent of the one-person media era due to COVID-19 and the increasing importance of digital capabilities, Dapsimni Library plans to improve the digital media creation and usage environment for residents, aiming to nurture professional booktubers.

Additionally, Dongdaemun-gu Informatization Library was recognized for its efforts to support knowledge and information vulnerable groups by operating ▲tactile book production and functions (for the visually impaired) ▲dementia-specialized shelves (for the elderly) ▲informatization education (for North Korean defectors) ▲hand-knitting programs (for multicultural families), and was selected for Seoul City's library policy support project ‘Support Center for Knowledge and Information Vulnerable Groups,’ receiving 25 million KRW in funding.

You Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “We will expand digital library services and provide more diverse reading content to eliminate reading blind spots and contribute to cultural revitalization.”
