[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] SKC, which commercialized biodegradable PLA film packaging materials for the first time in the world, and SPC Pack, the packaging production affiliate of SPC Group, have joined hands to expand eco-friendly biodegradable packaging materials. SKC's eco-friendly biodegradable film is an environmentally friendly packaging material that decomposes 100% in a short period under landfill conditions.
On the 29th, SKC and SPC Pack held an 'Eco-friendly Packaging Business Cooperation Agreement Ceremony' at SKC headquarters in Jongno-gu, Seoul, and agreed to cooperate to expand biodegradable packaging materials. SKC will supply biodegradable film, and SPC Pack will use it as packaging materials for franchise products within the SPC Group, such as Baskin-Robbins, Paris Croissant, and Dunkin. They are also promoting plans for SPC Pack to develop and produce eco-friendly packaging materials using other biodegradable materials from SKC.
The starting point is disposable packaging materials used at Baskin-Robbins. Afterwards, the two companies will apply SKC biodegradable film to individual packaging materials for Dunkin products, SPC Samlip bread packaging, and so on. Additionally, they plan to expand to product packaging materials within the Paris Baguette, Paris Croissant, and Pascucci brands.
This collaboration is the result of both companies' efforts to pursue eco-friendliness. SPC Pack has been striving to realize consumer food safety and social value. In 2018, it simultaneously obtained 'Green Technology' and 'Green Product' certifications for developing safe food packaging materials, and also received certification as a green specialized company by using environmentally friendly ink. Furthermore, it was selected as a Food Package winner at the WorldStar Awards by the World Packaging Organization for its green technology.
SKC has been expanding its eco-friendly biodegradable material business with the technology that commercialized corn-extracted biodegradable PLA packaging materials for the first time in the world in 2009. In 2018, it began supplying banana packaging materials to Starbucks Korea, and the following year expanded supply to bakery packaging materials for Starbucks Korea.
Since last year, SKC has been preparing to commercialize high-strength PBAT materials that improve the weaknesses of another biodegradable material, PBAT. Recently, it has developed and expanded supply of upgraded PLA film products that incorporate PHA, another biodegradable material, to leverage the advantages of each material.
An SKC official said, "SKC will strive to contribute to the expansion of the domestic biodegradable plastic market and the achievement of plastic net zero by cooperating with various customers such as SPC Pack."
