Ministry of the Interior and Safety to Implement Enhanced Coverage 'Comprehensive Volunteer Insurance' Starting May 1

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 29th that it has signed a new contract for the '2021 Volunteer Comprehensive Insurance,' significantly improving coverage amounts and items to protect volunteers who suffer unexpected accidents or natural disasters during volunteer activities, and will implement it starting next month 1st.

From next month 1st, the treatment cost limit for injuries sustained during volunteer activities will be greatly increased from 30 million KRW to 50 million KRW, and the daily outpatient allowance for injuries will rise from 30,000 KRW to 50,000 KRW, increasing the coverage amounts of the nine most utilized major items by more than 40% compared to before. Additionally, seven new coverage items such as personal information protection liability (200 million KRW) and hit-and-run/uninsured vehicle injury (500 million KRW) will be newly added.

Insurance claims can be filed with the insurance company through the volunteer center of the city, county, or district to which the volunteer belongs when an accident occurs. When a volunteer reports the damage to their affiliated volunteer center, the center will prepare the claim form and required documents and proceed with the insurance reception and claim procedures. Detailed progress status and coverage amounts can be continuously inquired through the comprehensive insurance hotline or KakaoTalk channel.

This year, with the use of a dedicated app between volunteer center insurance officers and insurance companies, submission and document filing will become possible, enabling faster and more convenient insurance payments.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety will strengthen promotion through various channels to ensure volunteers do not miss out on utilizing the comprehensive insurance system due to lack of awareness. In addition to diversifying online promotions such as card news, YouTube, and KakaoTalk, offline promotions such as daily newspaper advertisements and promotional videos inside trains will also be expanded to inform about the comprehensive insurance through various routes.

Park Seong-ho, Director of the Local Autonomy and Decentralization Office, said, “We expect that the strengthened coverage of the Volunteer Comprehensive Insurance will allow volunteers to participate with greater peace of mind,” adding, “We will continue to strive to provide a safe volunteer environment and protect volunteers.”
