Seoul Gangseo-gu Hosts Outdoor Healing Program for Seniors with Dementia and Their Families

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Noh Hyun-song) has prepared an outdoor healing program for elderly dementia patients and their families.

The Gangseo-gu Dementia Safety Center (Director Jeong Ji-hyang) announced that it will promote the "Memory-filled Healing Farm Project" targeting elderly dementia patients with mild symptoms registered at the center.

The purpose is to provide dementia patients and their families with time for healing and relaxation, maintaining physical and mental health, and improving cognitive abilities.

The Memory-filled Healing Farm Project is a long-term project aimed at relieving depression and enhancing cognitive and physical functions of dementia patients, consisting of four programs: ▲Memory-filled Jar ▲Memory-filled Garden ▲Memory-filled Healing Forest Experience ▲Memory-filled Botanical Garden.

First, the Memory-filled Jar and Memory-filled Garden programs involve traditional jang (fermented soybean paste) making, gardening, concerts, and garden parties, and have started operating this month at the Dream Reach Farm located in the Oswe-dong area of Gangseo-gu.

Dementia patients will have healing time by recalling old memories through traditional jang making using meju (fermented soybean blocks) and sun-dried salt.

Also, they will create gardens with their families, plant seasonal crops such as seed potatoes and lettuce, and build memories while enjoying healing time.

In particular, the jang completed through the Memory-filled Jar program will be shared not only with dementia patients and their families but also with underprivileged residents in the community.

The Memory-filled Healing Forest Experience and Memory-filled Botanical Garden programs are scheduled to operate in the second half of this year.

The Memory-filled Healing Forest Experience will be operated to help relieve physical and mental fatigue and maintain the physical and mental health of the elderly through activities such as walking trails, forest gymnastics, and meditation, fostering a connection with nature.

The Memory-filled Botanical Garden program will be conducted in collaboration with the Seoul Botanical Garden, including activities such as creating botanical art and exploring wildflowers. It aims to provide dementia patients with opportunities to feel seasonal changes through various flowers and plants, relieve depression, and heal their minds.

A district official said, "We hope that dementia patients and their families will have time for healing and relaxation through various experiences in this program," adding, "We will continue to develop diverse programs to support the emotional well-being and health promotion of dementia patients."

Meanwhile, last year, the Gangseo-gu Dementia Safety Center was the only district in Seoul to win the grand prize at the Dementia Safety Center Best Practice Competition hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Central Dementia Center through its non-face-to-face dementia prevention program.
