Sustainable Development Local Government Council Member Kim Soo-young, Yangcheon District Mayor, Joins in Unison... "Actions Threatening the Entire Earth's Ecosystem Must Be Stopped Immediately" Demands
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Kim Su-young, Mayor of Yangcheon District, actively joined the statement issued by the Sustainable Development Local Governments Council (Chairman Kim Hong-jang, Mayor of Dangjin) demanding the withdrawal of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant contaminated water discharge into the ocean.
The council, consisting of 29 local governments nationwide united in their commitment to realize sustainable development in their regions through cooperation among local governments, strategic planning in organic linkage with the central government, and participation in international trends, issued a statement on the 29th regarding the Japanese government’s official announcement on the 13th to discharge radioactive contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean.
In the statement, the council demanded ▲the withdrawal of the Fukushima radioactive contaminated water ocean discharge, which threatens human life and ecosystems, and the establishment of alternatives ▲and transparent consultation with the international community on the treatment process of all waste.
They also called for a strong governmental response, including international legal action, to ensure the Japanese government’s decision to discharge radioactive contaminated water into the ocean is revoked.
Mayor Kim Su-young said, “The discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant is not only affecting a few neighboring countries but is an act that threatens the entire ecosystem, requiring an international-level response,” adding, “Together with the council member local governments that are leading the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals, a shared social value and internationally agreed common objective, at the regional level, we will actively respond to the withdrawal of the Fukushima nuclear power plant contaminated water ocean discharge.”

Statement of the Sustainable Development Local Governments Council for the Withdrawal of Japan’s Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Contaminated Water Ocean Discharge
The decision to discharge Fukushima contaminated water into the ocean must be withdrawn for the sake of a sustainable global ecosystem!
On April 13, the Japanese government officially announced the discharge of radioactive contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean. This decision threatens not only its own citizens but also neighboring countries such as our nation, the safety of humanity worldwide, and ultimately the Earth’s ecosystem. The Japanese government must withdraw the decision to discharge radioactive contaminated water that causes destruction to human life and ecosystems and establish alternatives for long-term storage.
The Sustainable Development Local Governments Council is striving to realize sustainable development in regions through cooperation among local governments, strategic planning in organic linkage with the central government, participation in international trends, and expanded public participation. Japan’s discharge of radioactive contaminated water disregards the promise for a sustainable Earth and humanity, which was resolved by 193 countries at the UN in 2015. The Japanese government must withdraw the decision to discharge radioactive contaminated water and make efforts to eliminate all risks arising from nuclear power plants.
The Sustainable Development Local Governments Council protests the Japanese government’s decision to discharge radioactive contaminated water into the ocean and demands the following from both the government and the Japanese government.
First, the Japanese government must immediately withdraw the decision to discharge radioactive contaminated water into the ocean, which threatens human life and ecosystems, and prepare alternatives for long-term storage.
Second, the Japanese government must transparently disclose the treatment process of all waste generated since the Fukushima accident and consult with the international community.
Third, the government must actively respond together with local governments to ensure the immediate withdrawal of the Japanese government’s decision to discharge radioactive contaminated water into the ocean, explore all measures including international legal action, and transparently disclose the process to the public.
