[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, held a meeting with parents of children who achieved the 'Reading One Thousand Books Before School Age' (hereinafter referred to as One Thousand Books) at the Jungnang-gu Public Information Library on the 24th.
At the meeting, parents of children who achieved the One Thousand Books shared their experiences and know-how, and discussed the future direction of reading education in Jungnang-gu together.
The attending parents said, "At first, reading one thousand books felt difficult, but once we fell into the joy of reading, it was quick," and "We feel that our child's thinking skills and expressive abilities have become much richer."
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, "More precious than the number one thousand is the time that children and parents spend together every night before sleeping," and added, "We ask for continued interest and participation in One Thousand Books, where not only children but also parents can grow together."
The One Thousand Books program conducted by the Jungnang-gu Public Library is designed for children aged 5 to 7 to read one thousand books over three years to foster reading habits during early childhood.
Currently, about 58% of children aged 5 to 7 in Jungnang-gu, totaling 4,192 children, are participating, with 83 children having achieved the goal. The Jungnang-gu Public Library plans to distribute a collection of excellent case studies containing essays from children who achieved One Thousand Books and their parents to local libraries, community service centers, and childcare institutions to encourage more children to participate in the program.
