[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] On the 28th (Korean time), which attracted attention as Samsung Electronics' first standalone laptop Unpacked (new product launch) event, the 'Galaxy ecosystem' was a common theme at the 'Samsung Galaxy Unpacked' event. Samsung's strong determination to expand the organic ecosystem connecting smartphones, smartwatches, smart keys, and smart home appliances to laptops was evident. The new laptop models boast the highest level of performance in the Galaxy Book series to date, featuring an ultra-slim design with a thickness of 11mm and the latest Intel processors.

"Let's create a PC that embodies the Galaxy experience"

Samsung Electronics held the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event, streamed live worldwide at 11 p.m. that day, unveiling two new laptop models: the 'Galaxy Book Pro' and 'Book Pro 360.' The Galaxy Book Pro is the 'thinnest Galaxy Book,' and the Galaxy Book Pro 360 features a 360-degree rotating display and an S Pen. The Unpacked event, which lasted about 50 minutes, featured 11 speakers, including Samsung Electronics' Wireless Business Division President (CEO) Tae-moon Roh.

President Roh, who delivered the keynote speech, appeared wearing a black jacket and T-shirt to the piano Guys version of Samsung Electronics' Galaxy brand sound 'Over the Horizon.' Over the Horizon is a brand sound first introduced by Samsung Electronics in 2011, rearranged differently each year and installed on flagship smartphone models.

President Roh said, "While envisioning new mobile computing, I asked myself why laptops cannot be like smartphones," adding, "The answer is mobility, connectivity, and continuity. All the core elements of the Galaxy experience?performance on the move, vivid displays, and organic integration with other devices?have been brought to the PC." This is the background behind creating a mobile computer imbued with the DNA of Galaxy smartphones.

Efforts to build smartphone-laptop connectivity

Samsung Electronics spent considerable time explaining the Galaxy ecosystem, which is key to organic integration. Cooperation with partners such as Microsoft and Intel was essential to link laptops and smartphones. President Roh said, "For the first time, we have perfectly combined Android and Windows operating systems," adding, "This is the result of continuous open collaboration to provide the best connectivity experience."

Laptops equipped with the Windows operating system seamlessly connected with Galaxy smartphones running the Android operating system. For example, through 'Link to Windows' and Microsoft's 'Your Phone' app integration, the Galaxy Book Pro series can run up to five smartphone apps simultaneously. Users can make calls with friends while sending messages, check schedules on the calendar app, and enjoy games. Features provided on Galaxy smartphones such as 'Quick Search,' 'Quick Share,' and 'Smart Switch' are also supported on laptops for the first time.

For the first time on a laptop, integration with 'SmartThings' allows the laptop to serve as a smart home hub. Through the SmartThings app on the Galaxy Book Pro series, users can turn off lights or adjust the temperature at home. Kitchen appliance control is also possible, and the locations of Galaxy smartphones, tablets, wearables, and Galaxy SmartTags can be checked. In the future, the AI platform 'Bixby' will also be supported.

Strong partnerships with external partners were also evident at the Unpacked event. Among the 11 speakers, three senior officials from Microsoft and Intel appeared. Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer (CPO) of Microsoft, stated, "We will continue to collaborate to connect the best operating system and mobile technology, Windows and the Galaxy ecosystem." He praised the Galaxy ecosystem as "simple, smooth, and very cool."

Intel 11th Gen Core Processor... Ultra-slim design

Samsung also emphasized hardware excellence. The Galaxy Book Pro and Book Pro 360 support LTE and 5G mobile networks. Next-generation Wi-Fi 6E support is planned. Equipped with the latest Intel 11th Gen Core processors, they have also earned Intel's high-efficiency PC certification, the 'Intel Evo Platform.' Notably, the Galaxy Book Pro 360 is compatible with the S Pen. A powerful battery capable of about 20 hours of video playback is another advantage.

The ultra-slim and ultra-light design is also a key feature. The Galaxy Book Pro has a clamshell design but boasts the thinnest thickness ever. The 13.3-inch model is 11.2mm thick and weighs 868g. Charles McCarron, head of Samsung Electronics' Global Corporate Strategy, said, "The Galaxy Book Pro is the thinnest laptop in the Galaxy Book series, thinner than a smartphone," adding, "The Galaxy Book Pro 360 is more than a PC; it is a creative canvas." The surface uses special materials employed by aerospace manufacturers to enhance durability.

The Galaxy Book is the first to feature an AMOLED display, offering a rich entertainment experience. The display covers 120% of the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI-P3) color gamut and features a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio for a vivid viewing experience. It also includes an Intelligent Color Engine for enhanced automatic color correction. Equipped with AKG speakers and 'Dolby Atmos' functionality, it supports 'Intelligent Noise Cancelling' to eliminate unnecessary ambient noise.

The newly applied 'Pro Keyboard' with a scissor mechanism features wider keys and rubber domes that reduce key travel distance to 1mm. The touchpad is up to 23% larger than the previous model, providing more comfortable movement. A USB-C type universal charger supporting 65W fast charging enhances portability and reduces waste. The charger size is about 52% smaller than the previous model. Hassan Azum, head of NC products at Samsung Electronics North America, explained, "We are practicing sustainability to create a healthier planet," adding, "We reduced packaging size by 39% to generate less waste."
