Dobong-gu, First Seoul District to Train Specialized Instructors for Sustainable Development Villages

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dobong-gu (Mayor Dongjin Lee) is launching the Seoul metropolitan area’s first “Sustainable Development Education (ESD) Village Specialist Instructor Training Course.”

Dobong-gu completed recruitment on April 15 for the first cohort of the "2021 RCE Dobong-gu ESD Village Specialist Instructor Training Course," which supports ESD classes at local elementary schools and related institutions using two types of elementary school ESD textbooks independently developed in 2020 through public-private-academic collaboration.

After document screening, 37 students were finally selected on April 20 and will receive classes from April 22 to June 30 according to a specialized ESD village specialist instructor curriculum planned directly by RCE Dobong-gu.

In this main curriculum, including field training, participants will learn about Dobong-gu’s sustainable development goal implementation, RCE Dobong-gu, lifecycle-based ESD, and lecture techniques based on the ESD textbooks.

The lectures will be supported by instructors including ▲ Woojin Cho, Head of Education at the UNESCO Korean Commission ▲ Jongbok Seon, CEO of the Glocal Leadership Institute ▲ Bongae Lee, Principal of Seoul Changgyeong Elementary School ▲ Seongsook Oh, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Lifelong Education Counseling at Soongsil Cyber University.

Upon completion of the training and final selection, the district will award ESD instructor certificates to the instructors and grant them qualifications to participate as members of the “ESD Village Specialist Instructors” and “RCE Dobong-gu ESD Research Association” from the second half of the year. This includes involvement in developing ESD textbooks and teaching materials, participating in ESD learning and research, and joining domestic and international RCE city networks such as the World and Asia-Pacific RCE General Assemblies.

Mayor Dongjin Lee of Dobong-gu stated, “Our district’s independently developed ESD textbook, ‘17 Promises Connecting Our Village to the Planet,’ has attracted great interest. We now plan to promote the ESD Village Specialist Instructor Training Course to cultivate citizens who empathize with ESD values and possess professional knowledge about ESD based on this textbook. Through this course, we will strive to firmly establish our district as a hub for spreading sustainable development education.”
