[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] On the 26th, Heo Seong-mu, mayor of Changwon City, Gyeongnam, held an on-site communication administration with residents of Pyeongseong, Anseong, and Angok villages in Naeseo-eup, Masanhwoin-gu, the relocation area of Changwon Prison, and created an opportunity to directly resolve the obstacles so far.

The Changwon Prison relocation project promoted by the Ministry of Justice became visible with the securing of the basic design budget in 2018. However, it was suspended due to the issue that the relocation site adjoins Naknamjeongmaek, a natural preservation area.

In December 2019, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport passed the GB urban management plan as a measure to adjust the location of the prison site, but it is virtually at a standstill due to opposition from residents.

To resolve this, Mayor Heo met directly with residents to share that the current prison, after 50 years, needs modernization through relocation, and that the opinions of residents in the relocation area are equally important.

Mayor Heo said, “Among the residents' demands, the sewage pipeline installation construction has already secured a budget of 7.9 billion KRW and is planned to start in July. The local pending projects, urban planning roads (2 routes, 1.9 billion KRW) and public parking lot (1 site, 400 million KRW), are planned to start within the year through the city supplementary budget allocation and securing special grants (600 million KRW).”

Mayor Heo added, “For the remaining projects, we will also secure the budget by dividing the implementation annually to minimize residents' inconvenience.”
