[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Major foreign media outlets have highlighted actress Youn Yuh-jung, the first Korean actor to win an American Academy Award, saying she "made another history at the Academy."

At the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony held at Union Station in Los Angeles (LA), Youn Yuh-jung won the Best Supporting Actress award for her role as Soon-ja in the American independent film "Minari."

Major foreign media reported that Youn Yuh-jung played Soon-ja, a grandmother who came from Korea to the United States to help her daughter Monica (Han Ye-ri) and her husband, in "Minari," which is based on the autobiographical story of Korean-American director Lee Isaac Chung (Jeong Isaac).

They also noted that Youn Yuh-jung became the first Korean actor to be nominated for an Academy Award and went on to win.

They added that Youn Yuh-jung has caused a sensation in the Korean film industry for decades and portrayed a witty and meaningful character.

AP News reported that Youn Yuh-jung, 73 years old this year, has built her career in Korea for 50 years but was nominated for an Oscar for the first time this time.

They also mentioned that although director Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" won Best Picture and Best Director at the Academy Awards last year, Korean actors did not win any awards.

Additionally, they reported that Glenn Close, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress alongside Youn Yuh-jung for "Hillbilly Elegy," was nominated eight times but never won an Oscar.

AFP reported that after winning, Youn Yuh-jung paid tribute to Close, saying, "How could I possibly beat Glenn Close?"

UK's Sky News reported that Youn Yuh-jung won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2021 British Academy Film Awards held on the 11th and then went on to win the Oscar.

They added that at the British Academy Film Awards, Youn Yuh-jung made the audience laugh by describing herself as a "snobbish British person" during the ceremony, and on this day, she made a joke using her own name.
