[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the morning of the 23rd, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon and Environment Minister Han Jeong-ae met at Seoul City Hall to discuss issues related to the Sudogwon Landfill Site.
This meeting was a follow-up to the four-party meeting held on the 15th between the Ministry of Environment, Seoul City, Incheon City, and Gyeonggi Province. Both sides agreed on the importance of joint efforts by the Ministry of Environment and the three metropolitan governments to ensure that residents of the Sudogwon area do not worry about the waste landfill issue.
Mayor Oh Se-hoon stated, “Cooperation among the three metropolitan governments is essential for the stable disposal of waste in the Sudogwon area,” adding, “I requested the Ministry of Environment to take the lead and coordinate efforts among the heads of the three metropolitan governments.”
In response, Minister Han Jeong-ae said, “Along with working-level discussions, I will create opportunities to meet with the heads of the metropolitan governments to reduce differences in positions between the cities and provinces and actively mediate and coordinate to derive mutually beneficial alternatives.”
Meanwhile, during this meeting, the Ministry of Environment and Seoul City agreed to continuously discuss measures to advance carbon neutrality in the transportation sector and respond to the increasing demand for zero-emission vehicles, including securing subsidies for electric vehicle purchases, expanding hydrogen charging stations, introducing hydrogen commercial vehicles such as hydrogen buses and garbage trucks in the public sector, and promoting waste recycling and reduction.
