Dongfeng, Chery, Changan, Guangzhou Announce Annual Sales Plans for New Energy Vehicles
President Xi Jinping Pledges Carbon Neutrality by 2060 at Climate Summit
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] Chinese President Xi Jinping announced at the 'Climate Summit' held on the 22nd that China aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, and Chinese automobile companies are successively revealing plans to develop low-carbon vehicles.
According to Xinhua News Agency on the 23rd, Dongfeng Motor Corporation stated that by 2024, 100% of new models of its main passenger car brands will be electric vehicles, and by 2025, annual sales of new energy vehicles will increase to 1 million units. Dongfeng also introduced plans to actively promote research and development (R&D) in future energy technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells to commercialize these fields.
Chery Automobile announced the 'Chery 4.0 Era Overall Engine Architecture' at the Shanghai Motor Show. Chery plans to develop new energy vehicles in two major phases. First, by 2030, it aims to complete the eco-friendly transition by applying new energy technologies such as pure electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles. In the second phase, it plans to raise the proportion of new energy vehicles to over 40% of total sales and to develop and commercialize the hydrogen energy market.
Changan Automobile revealed plans to realize clean energy application and smart energy management control, transforming traditional manufacturing into eco-friendly smart manufacturing. Over the next five years, it will launch 26 new smart electric vehicles and plans to introduce two smart electric vehicle models within the year.
Guangzhou Automobile also announced plans to convert 20% of its total sales to new energy vehicles by 2025. It even disclosed plans to convert all of its own brands to electric vehicles.
Chui Dongsu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Market Information Joint Conference, said, "Due to the increase in car ownership in China, carbon emissions are rising, making it more difficult for the automobile industry to reach carbon peak." He explained, "To achieve the carbon peak by 2030, the new energy vehicle industry must be developed," adding, "The penetration rate of new energy vehicles must be increased to 50% by 2030."
