[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] U.S. President Joe Biden announced at the Climate Change Summit that the United States will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by half compared to 2005 levels by 2030. Based on this policy, there is a plan to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
According to foreign media such as CNN on the 22nd (local time), President Biden emphasized in his keynote speech at the virtual Climate Change Summit, "The United States will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50-52% compared to 2005 levels by 2030." He added, "Climate change is causing a severe crisis across all sectors. If we take measures to create a fair and clean economy, the entire planet can prosper more."
President Biden stated, "If we do nothing against climate change, the costs will continue to rise," and "The world's largest economies must actively engage in fighting climate change." He further emphasized, "Responding to climate change is a moral and economically necessary task."
He continued, "Climate measures also present economic opportunities," adding, "The United States is moving toward halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and these measures will make the U.S. economy net-zero in emissions by no later than 2050."
The Climate Change Summit held that day was hosted by President Biden and attended by leaders from 40 major countries, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting will continue until the 23rd.
