Gwangju City Council Urges Withdrawal of Fukushima Nuclear Plant Contaminated Water Discharge

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] The Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Chairman Kim Yong-jip) condemned the Japanese government's decision to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean on the 22nd and urged its immediate withdrawal.

In a statement issued that day, the council said, "Even after treatment with the multi-nuclide removal equipment, the radioactive contaminated water from Fukushima contains radioactive nuclides such as tritium, which cause radiation exposure to the human body," and added, "Discharging this into the ocean without any safety measures is a catastrophic act equivalent to a biochemical attack on all humanity, including our neighboring country."

It continued, "Since the Fukushima nuclear accident, the Japanese government has prohibited the measurement and disclosure of radiation concentration and components," and condemned, "We can no longer trust the Japanese government's announcement, which neither transparently discloses information nor allows objective verification by the international community."

Chairman Kim Yong-jip said, "To protect the lives and safety of citizens and ensure the safety of the ecosystem, we will pool all our capabilities and respond strongly to ensure that this discharge decision is withdrawn at an early stage."
