Land Rover All New Defender Wins 2021 World Car Design of the Year Award

Land Rover All New Defender Wins 2021 World Car Design of the Year Award

[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Jaguar Land Rover Korea announced on the 22nd that the Land Rover All New Defender won the World Car Design of the Year award at the 2021 World Car Awards.

The World Car Design of the Year is awarded to a vehicle released in the past year that has opened new horizons with top-level technological innovation and design. A panel of seven automotive design experts first reviews the candidate vehicles and creates a recommended list for the judges, after which a final vote is conducted by 93 journalists worldwide to select the ultimate winning model.

The All New Defender is characterized by proportions and silhouette such as a short overhang (the distance from the vehicle end to the wheel center). In particular, it combines the original Defender’s distinctive vertical design, side-opening tailgate, and externally mounted spare tire with modern design elements.

It also maintains a design emphasizing simplicity and durability, highlighting clarity and practicality by exposing the body structure and fixtures that are generally hidden from view. Land Rover’s next-generation infotainment system, PIVI Pro, was also applied for the first time.

Gerry McGovern, Chief Creative Officer of Jaguar Land Rover, said, "Our vision was to create the 21st-century Defender by maintaining the Defender’s historic DNA and best off-road performance while pushing the boundaries of engineering, technology, and design." He added, "We are delighted to receive the world’s most prestigious design award."
