eBay Korea Introduces 'Books to Help Understand Our Child's Disability and Illness'... 1+1 Donation Campaign

Introducing 'Books to Help Understand Our Children's Disabilities and Illnesses' Until the 20th of Next Month
Donation of Related Books to Domestic and International Disability Welfare Centers and Libraries through Milal Welfare Foundation

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] eBay Korea announced on the 22nd that it will launch the 'Disability Book Support Campaign' in collaboration with the Milal Welfare Foundation to mark the Day for the Elimination of Disability Discrimination on April 20.

Through this Disability Book Support Campaign, eBay Korea introduces 'Books to Help Understand Our Children's Disabilities and Illnesses' recommended by four experts. The campaign supports not only parents struggling with their children's disabilities but also non-disabled individuals to gain a better understanding of disabilities and chronic illnesses.

For one month until May 20, eBay Korea will donate disability-related books to five domestic disability welfare centers and the library within the Pagraum Disability Welfare Center in Cebu, Philippines, through the Milal Welfare Foundation, which supports disability welfare. The donation amount will correspond to the number of books sold on Gmarket and Auction, contributed from eBay Korea’s member-participation social contribution funds, Sponsorship Shopping and Sharing Shopping.

Experts participating in this campaign include ▲ Kang Byeongcheol, a pediatrician and medical translation specialist who is a parent of a person with a mental disability ▲ Dr. Lee Kyunga, a parent of an autistic person and a youth and family counselor ▲ Jang Nuri, an art education expert and parent of a person with developmental disability (epilepsy) ▲ Ryu Seungyeon, a writer and parent of a person with developmental disability. They recommended a total of 32 books, including 13 books related to various disabilities and illnesses such as autism, intellectual disability, epilepsy, schizophrenia, and mental illness; 11 essays on disability and diversity; and 8 children’s stories and picture books about disabilities to read with children.

The book Gift: For Those Raising a Slightly Different Child, published this month, was recommended by three of the four experts. Gift was co-written by a special education teacher and a parent of an autistic child, containing information on special education for children. Other recommended books include When a Loved One Has a Mental Illness, recommended for families of people with schizophrenia; Defense for the Disqualified by lawyer Kim Wonyoung, who has a physical disability and offers a healthy perspective on disability; and children’s picture books and stories such as The Short-Eared Rabbit and Anatol’s Small Pot.

More detailed book introductions and expert recommendations can be found on the eBay Korea blog. You can search for 'Disability Book Exhibition' on Gmarket and Auction sites or find the promotion through Auction’s 'CarePlus'.

Hong Yunhee, Director of Corporate Communications at eBay Korea, said, "The experts who recommended books in this event share the common goal of creating positive influence by sharing the knowledge and information they gained while raising their children. We hope this will provide valuable information to parents who feel overwhelmed by their children's disability diagnoses."

Meanwhile, eBay Korea is leading ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management by carrying out various social impact activities supporting people with disabilities. At the end of last year, with support from the eBay Foundation, it donated 100 million KRW for the opening of the 'Comprehensive Support Center for Disabled Enterprises.' Earlier in February, it delivered hygiene products to fire departments in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, where COVID-19 cases surged, as well as to disabled people in self-quarantine and substitute caregivers for disabled persons. In 2019, after the wildfires in Gangwon Province, it supported evacuation wheelchairs for disabled people at disability facilities, nursing hospitals, and special schools in Gangwon Province to prepare for disasters. Through Auction’s 'CarePlus,' Korea’s first specialized disability product marketplace operated by eBay Korea, it also supports market access for disability product startups.
