President Moon's Interview with The New York Times Reveals Views on the Korean Peninsula... "The Historic North Korea-US Summit Is Clearly a Trump Achievement"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] President Moon Jae-in said in an interview published by The New York Times on the 21st, "When I took office as president in 2017, we were truly concerned about the possibility of war breaking out again on the Korean Peninsula."
President Moon explained efforts to resolve the crisis of war on the Korean Peninsula, conveying to The New York Times that North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong-un said, "If security can be guaranteed without nuclear weapons, why would we endure sanctions and carry the burden of nuclear weapons?"
In particular, President Moon evaluated, "President Trump’s holding of the first-ever summit between North Korea and the United States was definitely his achievement."
The New York Times explained, "However, President Moon regretted that President Trump declared 'there is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea' without completing the previous achievements," adding, "When Chairman Kim and President Trump met again in Hanoi in 2019, the negotiations yielded no results, and they left the negotiation table without agreeing on how to advance the Singapore Agreement."
