Shared Bicycle 'Tarangkke' Free Use and Other Events Held
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 22nd that it will operate the ‘13th Climate Change Week’ from the 22nd to the 28th in celebration of the ‘51st Earth Day.’
During Climate Change Week, various promotional campaigns will be conducted under the theme ‘Restore our Earth, Starting Now with Me! Carbon Neutrality 2045,’ including an Earth Day commemorative ceremony, lights-out event, free use of the shared bicycle ‘Tarangke,’ and social network events.
Through these activities, the city plans to encourage citizens to take action toward carbon neutrality and raise awareness.
The Earth Day commemorative ceremony will be held on the 22nd at the 5·18 Democracy Square, featuring poetry recitations, a citizen’s declaration of carbon neutrality practice, and a climate action × carbon neutrality transition village agreement ceremony. To prevent COVID-19, the event will be held simply and mainly online.
In particular, Green Leaders from each district, who are engaged in environmental protection activities, will declare the ‘5+1 Carbon Neutrality Practice Messages,’ which include ▲‘Energy Transition’ starting with electricity saving ▲‘Low-Carbon Industrialization’ starting with purchasing low-carbon products ▲‘Future Mobility’ starting with public transportation and electric/hydrogen vehicles ▲‘Circular Economy’ starting with new and recycled materials ▲‘Carbon Absorption Forest’ starting with planting my own tree ▲and +‘Carbon Neutral Culture’ starting with communication and empathy.
The lights-out event will be held for 10 minutes from 8 p.m. on the 22nd at public institution buildings such as city hall, district offices, related organizations, and apartment complexes.
Also, from the 19th to the 30th, in connection with the Bitgoeul Climate School program of the International Climate Environment Center Foundation, an ‘I Drew a Green Earth’ drawing contest will be held at elementary schools in the area.
This contest aims to provide an opportunity for young children to reconsider the importance of climate change and the practice of carbon-neutral living.
Furthermore, from the 15th to the 28th during Climate Change Week, those who join as members of the shared bicycle ‘Tarangke’ will be provided with free rides for two weeks from the date of registration.
In addition, an online citizen participation event will be held on the International Climate Environment Center Foundation’s Instagram and Facebook, where participants can leave comments on quizzes related to the climate crisis and carbon neutrality or certify their use of tumblers and reusable containers to reduce disposable products in daily life, with various prizes given by lottery.
Song Yong-su, head of the Climate Environment Policy Division of the city, said, “On the occasion of Climate Change Week, we ask citizens to join in small actions such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, turning off unnecessary lights at home, and unplugging unused electric heaters,” and added, “We hope all citizens actively participate in the nationwide simultaneous lights-out event.”
