Possible Emission Reduction Requests to Allies Including Han

[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The Biden administration in the United States has set a goal to reduce carbon emissions by half by 2030, according to U.S. media reports on the 20th (local time).

Biden Aims to Cut Carbon Emissions by Half by 2030 US President Joe Biden is touring an electric bus company via video conference on the 20th.

U.S. media outlets such as The Washington Post, Bloomberg, and The Hill cited anonymous sources on the same day, reporting that this will be officially announced at the Climate Change Summit scheduled for the 22nd.

In response, the White House spokesperson stated that no final decision has been made. An official also mentioned that the government might not present specific target figures.

Bloomberg reported that if the 50% reduction is confirmed, it would be double the target set by the Obama administration. The Obama administration had set a goal in 2015 to reduce carbon emissions by 26-28% by 2025.

The outlet noted that President Biden accepted the minimum 50% carbon emission reduction demand made by environmental groups and European countries. Environmental organizations have argued that such a level of carbon emission reduction is necessary to lower the global temperature by 1.5 degrees Celsius.

President Biden plans to explain this target as part of the U.S. rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement at the Climate Change Summit held on the 22nd and 23rd.

More than 40 leaders, including President Moon Jae-in, will participate in this summit. Attention is also focused on the attendance of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

One day prior, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken pressured that the U.S. alone cannot achieve carbon emission reduction goals and emphasized the need for participation from allies and countries worldwide. The U.S. is also expected to strengthen carbon emission reduction demands for countries participating in the Climate Change Summit.
