Samsung Electronics Recommends Repatriation of India Branch Expatriates... Support Including Round-Trip Airfare for Families Amid the emergency caused by the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in India, police blocked roads and stood guard in the capital, New Delhi, on the 20th (local time). As New Delhi saw a sharp increase with daily COVID-19 cases reaching around 25,000, a lockdown was imposed from 10 PM the previous day until 5 AM on the 26th for one week. [Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hyun-joo] As the spread of COVID-19 worsens locally in India, Samsung Electronics India has advised its expatriates and their families to return to Korea.

On the morning of the 20th, Samsung Electronics India announced internally that it would support round-trip airfare and self-quarantine expenses related to the temporary return of expatriate families.

Samsung Electronics explained that this measure was taken considering the local situation of a rapid increase in confirmed cases and a shortage of hospital beds. Currently, there are about 100 Samsung Electronics expatriates in India, with an estimated 200 family members.

Samsung Electronics has been focusing on the Indian market, operating the world's largest mobile phone factory in Noida near New Delhi, the capital of India. Last year, when the COVID-19 outbreak occurred, Samsung Electronics also supported the return expenses of expatriate families. It appears that the company quickly introduced support measures as the local COVID-19 spread has recently become severe again.

The spread of COVID-19 in India is already reaching an uncontrollable situation. Just two months ago, the daily new confirmed cases were around 10,000, but recently they have been exceeding 250,000 every day. On this day, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India reported 1,761 new deaths, setting a new record high.
