[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] Hanul Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 (Pressurized Water Reactor, 1 million kW class) located in Uljin-gun, Gyeongbuk, has set a new domestic record for the longest continuous operation of a nuclear power plant, achieving 3,885 days of uninterrupted operation (excluding planned preventive maintenance periods).
According to Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. Hanul Nuclear Power Headquarters (Head Park Beom-su), Hanul Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3, which began commercial operation in 1998, is the first Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant applying domestically developed technology. This record is being recognized as a demonstration of the safety and safe operation capabilities of Korean-type nuclear power plants once again.
This record was achieved without a single shutdown from July 25, 2008, to April 20, 2021. During this period, Hanul Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 produced approximately 97.12 million MWh of electricity through 3,885 days of continuous operation, which is enough to supply the entire Gyeongbuk Province for about 2 years and 4 months. (As of 2020, the annual electricity consumption of Gyeongbuk Province is approximately 41 million MWh.)
Meanwhile, Hanul Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3, which set this great record, entered its 16th planned preventive maintenance on the 20th, scheduled for about 96 days. Hanul Nuclear Power Plant will conduct statutory inspections under the Nuclear Safety Act, fuel replacement, and inspection and maintenance of power generation facilities.
