[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] A Korean expatriate male in his 50s in India died while receiving treatment after contracting COVID-19. This is the first time a Korean expatriate has lost their life to COVID-19 in India, where the virus has been rapidly spreading recently.
According to the Korean Embassy in India on the 19th, expatriate Mr. A, who was confirmed positive for COVID-19 and was receiving treatment at a hospital in New Delhi, passed away that morning. Mr. A was admitted to the hospital with his wife on the 15th, but his condition worsened. He continuously complained of breathing difficulties, and his blood oxygen saturation level reportedly dropped to 70-80%. The normal blood oxygen saturation level is 95-100%.
As the number of COVID-19 patients surged in New Delhi, Mr. A struggled to find an intensive care unit equipped with an oxygen respirator, and although the embassy helped secure an ICU bed on the afternoon of the 18th, he did not recover.
India has recently reported the highest number of daily COVID-19 cases worldwide for consecutive days. On this day, 273,810 new daily cases were reported, breaking the previous record for six consecutive days. In New Delhi alone, 25,462 new cases were reported the previous day. The embassy has reported about 70 confirmed cases among Korean expatriates, but the actual number of infected individuals is believed to be higher.
