[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] Chinese President Xi Jinping will deliver a video message emphasizing China's role amid the global crisis at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum, known as the Asian Davos Forum.

Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated at a regular briefing on the 19th that President Xi will participate in the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum on the 20th by having a pre-recorded video played. He said, "President Xi will systematically explain China's ideology and plans for the prosperity of Asian countries and the world."

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Boao Forum, and with the escalation of US-China tensions highlighting the need for global allies, President Xi's attendance was anticipated. Given that the Chinese president and premier have alternated attending the Boao Forum opening ceremonies, President Xi's attendance was expected. However, considering the COVID-19 situation, it appears that a speech via video message was chosen. Spokesperson Wang said, "This year marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Boao Forum," and added, "The Boao Forum has grown into an international forum with global influence over the past 20 years."

The forum, which opened the previous day in Hainan, China, is held under the theme "A New Era of Global Change" and runs until the 21st. Due to COVID-19, it is held in a hybrid format combining online and offline participation, with over 4,000 participants from about 60 countries, including 40 current and former political leaders, 74 current and former ministers, leaders of international organizations, business figures, scholars, government officials, and members of the press.
