Uniqlo Launches '2021 Disability Clothing Reform Support Campaign' with Seoul City and Korea Cerebral Palsy Welfare Association

[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Uniqlo announced on the 19th that it will carry out the ‘2021 Clothing Reform Support Campaign for People with Disabilities’ in collaboration with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Korea Cerebral Palsy Welfare Association.

This campaign supports customized altered clothing for people with disabilities who have difficulty wearing ready-made clothes. After consultation with participants, assistive technologists and tailors from the Korea Cerebral Palsy Welfare Association and the Seoul Assistive Device Center alter ready-made clothes according to the type of disability and provide them. This year, the support target in the Seoul area will be expanded from people with brain lesions to those with physical disabilities, providing benefits to more people with disabilities.

Uniqlo has participated in this campaign since 2019 under the brand philosophy of enriching everyone’s life through clothing. This year, it plans to support a total of 40,000 pieces of clothing and an operating budget of 290 million KRW.

Over the past two years, the Clothing Reform Support Campaign for People with Disabilities has provided more than 6,100 altered garments to over 1,200 people with brain lesions. The campaign has been evaluated as helpful in expanding clothing choices for people with disabilities and improving the quality of life for their families. Participants responded in satisfaction surveys that there were many improvements in daily life, such as reduced dressing time, decreased burden on caregivers who assist with dressing or undressing, and the ability to wear desired clothes.

A Uniqlo official said, “Choosing clothes is one of the basic rights, but many people with disabilities are unable to enjoy this right due to physical disabilities,” and added, “We hope that through this campaign, many people will overcome inconveniences caused by clothing and enjoy a better daily life.”

The 2021 Clothing Reform Support Campaign for People with Disabilities will be conducted for a total of 800 participants in Seoul and Busan, and applications will be accepted until May 14. More detailed information can be found on the Korea Cerebral Palsy Welfare Association’s website and social networking services (SNS).
