Hyundai Unveils Ioniq 5 in China for the First Time at Shanghai Motor Show, "Changing the Game"

[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] Hyundai Motor Company unveiled the Ioniq 5 for the first time at the Shanghai Motor Show in China.

Hyundai Motor announced on the 19th (local time) that it revealed the Ioniq 5 at the '2021 Shanghai International Motor Show' held at the Shanghai Convention Center in China. The Ioniq 5 is the first model of Hyundai's dedicated electric vehicle brand, Ioniq.

The Ioniq 5 is the first model to apply the dedicated electric vehicle platform E-GMP, capable of driving up to 429 km on a single charge. It supports 350 kW ultra-fast charging, allowing the battery to be charged up to 80% within 18 minutes, and can drive up to 100 km with just 5 minutes of charging. The all-wheel-drive model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. Additionally, it is equipped with V2L (Vehicle to Load) technology, which allows the vehicle to supply general power (220V) externally, enhancing practicality.

Lee Hong-peng, Head of Hyundai Motor and Kia Brand and Sales Division, said, "The Ioniq 5 is the first dedicated electric vehicle that offers a completely new experience with innovative design and advanced technology," adding, "Starting with this, we will enhance our competitiveness in electric vehicles in China."

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor has prepared a 2,520㎡ exhibition space at this Shanghai Motor Show, which runs until the 28th, offering various attractions. A total of 15 vehicles, including the Ioniq 5, Nexo, Mento EV, and Palisade, will be displayed in the exhibition space.

Furthermore, the detailed exhibition space is divided into four zones: the 'Ioniq Zone,' where visitors can view the Ioniq 5 and the dedicated electric vehicle platform E-GMP; the 'N Zone,' exhibiting the i20 Coupe, the 2020 WRC winning car; the 'HTWO Zone,' displaying the hydrogen electric vehicle Nexo and hydrogen fuel cell system; and the 'H Smart Plus (HSMART+) Zone,' showcasing China-exclusive technologies such as the Tucson L and Avante equipped with i-GMP.

On the same day, Hyundai Motor reiterated its four major strategies to target the Chinese market: electrification, strengthening hydrogen technology, presenting future mobility solutions, and enhancing local technological capabilities. A Hyundai Motor official stated, "Starting with the Ioniq 5, we will launch dedicated electric vehicle models in China every year from next year," and added, "By 2030, we will establish a total of 13 electrification lineups and lead the electrification of the Chinese automobile market."
