Daesang Introduces Eco-Friendly Uniforms Using Recycled PET Bottles

Daesang Introduces Eco-Friendly Uniforms Using Recycled PET Bottles The employees are wearing eco-friendly uniforms upcycled from used PET bottles.

[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Daesang announced on the 19th that it will produce and distribute 2,100 eco-friendly uniforms upcycled from waste PET bottles, the first in the food industry.

The upcycled eco-friendly uniforms are made from domestically produced yarn called 'recycled polyester,' which is created by recycling discarded transparent PET bottles. This helps significantly reduce the amount of waste plastic incineration and landfill, as well as decrease carbon dioxide emissions.

A total of 14,700 500ml transparent waste PET bottles were recycled to produce the 2,100 uniforms made by Daesang. Each uniform uses seven 500ml transparent waste PET bottles. Considering that the carbon dioxide emission per disposed PET bottle is 60g, Daesang achieved a carbon dioxide reduction effect of 882kg through the introduction of these eco-friendly uniforms.

The uniforms maintain the stretch and comfort of conventional polyester fabric, enhancing wearability, and add stability by using domestically produced yarn.

Daesang is sequentially distributing these uniforms to employees at discount stores and food material outlets and plans to complete distribution to all stores nationwide by the first half of this year. The company also plans to introduce various eco-friendly uniforms suitable for different seasons and purposes, such as winter uniforms.

A Daesang official stated, “We have designated this year as the inaugural year of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management and have begun establishing concrete plans to become a leading ESG management company. The introduction of eco-friendly uniforms is part of our ESG management efforts, and we plan to explore innovative measures linked to existing eco-friendly management activities, such as carbon dioxide reduction.”
