[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) announced on the 16th that it opened the doors of Jungnang Happiness 1 Farm located in Sinnnae-dong and held a seedling sharing event hosted by the Jungnang Urban Agriculture Cooperative (Chairman Lee Byung-jun).
On this day, residents who received allotments of garden plots were given five types of leafy vegetable seedlings, one type of seed, and fertilizer, and had the opportunity to plant the seedlings themselves. The district provided education on seedling planting techniques and related information to the allotment recipients.
Jungnang Happiness 1 Farm, which opened in 2019, has a total of 150 plots, of which 130 are allotted to residents and 20 are operated as experience gardens. Due to its great popularity, the competition rate for allotments has been increasing every year, with 1,082 applicants this year, resulting in a competition rate of 8.3:1.
Each household can apply for one plot (6.6㎡, approximately 2 pyeong), and the annual allotment fee is 30,000 KRW. When receiving a garden plot, seedlings and compost are also provided, and farming tools can be freely used.
In addition to Sinnnae-dong, the district operates two Jungnang Happiness Farms in Mangu-dong. Last year, Jungnang Happiness 2 Farm (Mangu No.1) was additionally established in Mangu 3-dong, and this year, 50 garden plots and 25 pear trees are being allotted, with an opening scheduled for the 20th.
Jungnang Happiness 3 Farm, with about 140 plots, will hold its completion ceremony on May 10.
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “I hope that people can soothe their weary hearts from COVID-19 and have healing time at Jungnang Happiness Farms,” and added, “We will strive to revitalize urban agriculture through various projects such as operating an urban farmer school and creating a complex urban agriculture space.”
