Yeongdeungpo-gu "Claim Your Local Tax Refund of 151 Million Won"

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) is launching a comprehensive cleanup of dormant local tax refunds totaling 150 million won by May, urging taxpayers to claim their refunds.

Local tax refunds mainly occur annually due to various reasons such as ▲car tax prepayment followed by ownership transfer ▲local income tax national tax correction ▲double payment, among others.

The district has operated an annual comprehensive cleanup period and has been striving to promote refunds; however, most of the unclaimed refunds are small amounts, and due to taxpayer errors, lack of interest, or lost contact caused by unknown addresses, the unclaimed taxes have continuously accumulated without being claimed.

As of the end of March, Yeongdeungpo-gu’s local tax unclaimed refunds total 3,272 cases amounting to approximately 151 million won.

Among these, cases with refunds of 50,000 won or less total 2,973, accounting for 91% of the total, indicating a need for special attention to small refund amounts.

Accordingly, the district plans to update information such as the name and address of unclaimed refund recipients and will resend refund notices containing the refund schedule and methods by May 31, focusing on facilitating refunds.

Individual details can be checked and refund claims made through the Seoul City e-Tax website, Government24, and smartphone apps, and applications can also be submitted by phone or fax to the Yeongdeungpo-gu Tax Collection Division.

Additionally, the district operates a ‘Small Refund Donation Program’ allowing recipients to donate unclaimed refunds to help neighbors in need.

Donated refunds are used through the Yeongdeungpo-gu Social Welfare Council to improve welfare for low-income vulnerable groups, and donors can receive income tax deduction benefits during year-end tax settlements.

Furthermore, a district official cautioned, “Refunds are never issued through ATMs under any circumstances, so taxpayers should be careful.”

Yeongdeungpo-gu Mayor Chae Hyun-il stated, “Local tax refunds expire if not claimed within five years, so even small refunds deserve attention to protect taxpayers’ rights and property rights,” adding, “We will continue to focus on comprehensive cleanup of unclaimed refunds and operation of the small refund donation program to protect taxpayers’ rights and realize trusted tax administration.”
