[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced on the 18th that it will recruit participants for the "2021 Campus Patent Universiade" from May 19 to June 7.
The Universiade is held with the purpose of discovering innovative talents focused on new technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Applications can be submitted by individuals or teams of up to three members who are domestic university (graduate) students through the Universiade website.
The event proceeds by having university (graduate) students propose ideas on technology topics presented by companies and research institutes, which are then adopted and utilized by the companies. The technology topics are divided into the "Invention Commercialization" category and the "Patent Strategy" category.
The Invention Commercialization category involves analyzing patented technologies owned by companies and research institutes and establishing concrete commercialization strategies based on this analysis. The Patent Strategy category consists of deriving core patents and R&D strategies for the technology topics presented by companies and research institutes.
A total of 29 companies and institutions, including Samsung Electronics, Hanmi Pharmaceutical, Hyundai Motor Company, SK Hynix, and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, are participating in the competition, presenting a total of 40 problems (9 in the Invention Commercialization category and 31 in the Patent Strategy category).
Especially this year, problems related to future promising technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution, such as autonomous driving and virtual reality, are focused on, which is expected to enhance university (graduate) students' understanding of future new technologies.
Participants in the Universiade will receive online and offline intellectual property education by category and expert consulting education on their answers.
Additionally, awardees will receive a total prize money of approximately 330 million KRW and awards such as the Presidential Award, Prime Minister's Award, Minister of Science and ICT Award, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award, and Commissioner of the Korean Intellectual Property Office Award. Employment advantages may also be granted when supported by sponsoring companies.
Park Ho-hyung, Director of the Industrial Property Policy Bureau at KIPO, said, "We expect that participants in the Universiade will have the opportunity to develop insight into industries and patent utilization capabilities by directly analyzing patent big data." He added, "KIPO will continue to support university (graduate) students to grow into talents equipped with patent big data capabilities through cooperation with the industry."
