[Asia Economy Reporter Geum Bo-ryeong] The Democratic Party's May 2nd party leadership election will be a three-way race among lawmakers Song Young-gil, Woo Won-shik, and Hong Young-pyo.


Lee Sang-min, the Democratic Party's election commissioner, announced on the 18th at the party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, that the final candidates for the party leader preliminary election were decided as lawmakers Song Young-gil, Woo Won-shik, and Hong Young-pyo.


Among the four candidates, Jeong Han-do, a Yongin city council member, was cut off in the preliminary round and did not advance to the final election.


In the preliminary election held that day, 297 out of 470 central committee voters participated, recording a turnout rate of 63.19%. The number of votes and rankings were not disclosed.


The joint touring speeches for electing the party leader and supreme council members will begin on the 20th in Gwangju and Jeonju, followed by Daejeon and Cheongju on the 22nd, Busan and Daegu on the 24th, and Chuncheon and Seoul on the 26th.


Seven candidates are running for the supreme council: three-term lawmaker Jeon Hye-sook, two-term lawmakers Kang Byung-won, Baek Hye-ryun, Seo Sam-seok, first-term lawmakers Kim Young-bae and Kim Yong-min, and Nonsan Mayor Hwang Myung-seon.
