[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] A man identified as A (72) was sentenced to 10 years in prison for assaulting and causing the death of his 103-year-old mother due to favoritism towards his younger brother.
On the 18th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Haenam Branch of the Gwangju District Court (Chief Judge Wonho Jo) announced that A was sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of killing a family member.
A was indicted for causing the death of his mother B (103) at his home in Jeonnam on the morning of January 29. He assaulted B because she allegedly insulted him, and when B resisted by scratching his face, he brought a stone from the yard, struck her, and stepped on her chest, leading to her death.
Investigations revealed that A, who has relied on a wheelchair due to a leg disability since the past, harbored resentment because he believed his mother favored his younger brother. A thought that B only bought clothes for his younger brother C or gave him more allowance, and that she disliked him.
The court stated, "A severely assaulted and killed an elderly victim during a trivial quarrel," and "Murder is a serious crime that takes a human life, and especially killing a parent is an inhumane crime that society cannot tolerate."
However, the court added an explanation regarding the sentence, saying, "It appears that A committed the crime impulsively, he confessed and showed remorse, and the bereaved family petitioned for leniency towards A."
