[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] A man in his 50s who hastily purchased car insurance after an accident in an attempt to claim insurance money was sentenced to six months in prison with a suspended sentence.

The man deceived others by pretending that the accident occurred after he had purchased insurance, although he was not insured at the time of the accident. However, since the insurance fraud was only attempted and not completed, the prison sentence was suspended.

The Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 3 (Presiding Judge Kim Yong-hee) announced on the 18th that Mr. A, who was indicted on charges of violating the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud, the Automobile Damage Compensation Guarantee Act, and assault, was sentenced to six months in prison with a two-year suspension and ordered to attend 40 hours of violence treatment lectures.

In September 2020, Mr. A hit a parked SUV while reversing a vehicle that was not insured in a cafe parking lot in Buk-gu, Ulsan.

The day after the accident, Mr. A purchased car insurance and then falsely claimed that the accident had occurred after the insurance was in effect, attempting to receive 1.51 million won in vehicle repair costs from the insurance company, but was caught and brought to trial.

Separately, in March 2020, Mr. A was also tried on charges of assault after an argument with a delivery person who could not enter the first-floor entrance door following a pizza order.

The court stated, “Considering that there are multiple prior convictions including two suspended prison sentences for violent acts, the nature of the crime is not good. However, since the degree of violence was not severe, Mr. A paid 200,000 won to the assault victim, the period without insurance was not long, and the insurance fraud was only attempted, a suspended sentence was imposed.”
