'Up to 63% Off' Seafood Festival Held for One Month Starting from the 19th

[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The government announced on the 18th that it plans to hold the 'Republic of Korea Fisheries Expo' for one month from the 19th of this month to the 19th of next month. The Fisheries Expo is a policy to support the public and fishermen who have been hit by COVID-19, with a budget of 39 billion KRW invested.

According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, about 31.3 billion KRW in sales have already been achieved through the Lunar New Year special exhibition and the spring special exhibition. The third special exhibition will be held in celebration of Family Month. This event will be participated in by eight large marts including E-Mart, 15 online shopping malls including Coupang, four consumer cooperatives including Hansalim, and four fisheries startup companies including Yamtable.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries designated sea squirt, kelp, red sea bream, eel, conger eel, and Atka mackerel as event items, considering price, consumption trends, and seasonal representativeness. Participating companies plan to select and discount items such as flatfish, rockfish, abalone, and hairtail on their own. In particular, the Ministry-designated items will have an additional company discount on top of the 20% discount supported by the Ministry, resulting in a maximum discount rate of up to 63%. Discount amounts will also be supported up to 10,000 KRW per person.

To revitalize traditional markets, the types of mobile seafood gift certificates, which were previously only 10,000 and 30,000 KRW denominations, have been expanded to 10,000, 50,000, and 200,000 KRW denominations. These gift certificates can be purchased at a 20% discount in connection with Zero Pay. Since the 200,000 KRW certificate can be purchased for 160,000 KRW, a maximum discount of up to 40,000 KRW per person is possible. The gift certificates can be used at about 9,300 Zero Pay affiliated seafood stores nationwide in traditional markets through the Zero Pay application.

Additionally, a resource management campaign will be promoted in connection with the event to prevent indiscriminate sales of young squid under the name 'Chongal Ojingeo' (Bullet Squid). To spread the so-called 'good consumption' culture, participating companies will refrain from using the nickname 'Chongal Ojingeo' and will join the Ministry's 'Chieoreop Campaign.' When selling mackerel and squid, which have closed seasons in April and May, as discounted event items, sales will be limited to frozen, dried, or semi-dried products only. It will be clearly indicated that these are not live products but frozen or dried items to provide transparent information.

Im Taehoon, head of the Distribution Policy Division at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, said, "Concerns about safety due to Japan's decision to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean could lead to a contraction in consumption, which may increase difficulties for our fishermen. We are holding this special event so that safe and high-quality seafood can be purchased cheaply during Family Month."
