Gimcheon City Launches Baekdudaegan Trail Maintenance... Cost Savings Achieved by Deploying Wildfire Helicopters

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] As trail maintenance projects are underway at various locations along the Baekdudaegan hiking trails in the Gimcheon area of Gyeongbuk, Gimcheon City has been deploying leased firefighting helicopters to rugged construction sites, achieving significant budget savings.

According to Gimcheon City on the 17th, this year's trail reinforcement work is being carried out in steep mountainous terrains such as Hwangaksan, Sudosan, and Chwijukbong?major famous mountains in Gimcheon?where it is difficult for people to transport materials.

The work prioritizes reinforcing facilities for hiking safety, such as clearing dangerous sections of the trail surface and replacing wooden stairs, and also includes installing convenience facilities like benches.

By using leased firefighting helicopters to transport approximately 30 tons of materials to these construction sites, Gimcheon City has saved about 100 million KRW in budget so far.

The Forestry and Greenery Division conducted preliminary on-site inspections, identified obstacles, and coordinated the project to ensure safe transportation, according to Gimcheon City.

Gimcheon City's hiking trails span about 250 km across a total of 29 routes, including the Baekdudaegan.

Mayor Kim Chung-seop of Gimcheon stated, "Hiking trails serve a public function by providing places for rest and physical fitness, so continuous management is necessary," adding, "The budget saved on material transportation through helicopter use in this project will be used to maintain other trail sections that require repairs."
