[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] The detention period of a public official from Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi Province, who is accused of speculating on real estate worth around 4 billion won using information obtained through work, has been extended.
The Criminal Division 6 of Uijeongbu District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Seong-dong) extended the detention of Mr. A, who is accused of violating the Act on the Prevention of Corruption and the Establishment and Operation of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, on the 16th.
Mr. A's detention period was scheduled to end on the same day, but the court accepted the prosecution's request for an extension, extending it until the 26th.
The detention period for suspects is 10 days each during the police and prosecution investigation stages. The prosecution usually indicts the suspect when the detention period expires. However, if the court permits, the prosecution can extend the detention period once for up to 10 days.
Mr. A is accused of purchasing seven plots of land totaling 2,600㎡ near the planned subway station site and a one-story prefabricated building in joint ownership with his spouse, Ms. B, using internal information obtained through work in September last year. Although purchased for 4 billion won, the current market price is estimated to have reached 10 billion won.
The police detained Mr. A and booked Ms. B without detention, and transferred the case on the 7th.
