Choi Dong-gyu, Honorary Holder of Gangneung Nongak, Passes Away

Choi Dong-gyu, Honorary Holder of Gangneung Nongak, passed away on the morning of the 16th at the age of 79.

He began learning Nongak at the age of nine, receiving training in Mudong and Beopgo. Recognized early for his skills, he served as the leader of the Nongak troupe from 1980. He also received the top prize at events such as the Gangneung Danoje Nongak Competition.

Gangneung Nongak is a type of Yeongdong Nongak. It is also called Nongsapuri Nongak because it includes agricultural rituals that reenact farming life. Its features include Dalmaji Gut (moon greeting ritual), torch play, and stepping on brass bridges. There are also Kimmaegi Nongak and Jilmeokgi, and Gilnori Nongak, which can be considered Dure Nongak. It was designated as a National Intangible Cultural Property in December 1985.

He was recognized as an assistant instructor in 1996. Devoted to teaching and preserving Gangneung Nongak at its core, he became an honorary holder in 2020.

Survived by Jongbin, Jongtae, Miok, and Miyeong. The funeral is being held at Gangneung Dongin Hospital Funeral Hall, Room 1, with the departure scheduled for 8 a.m. on the 18th.
