[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The number of new COVID-19 cases in India has surpassed 200,000, marking an all-time high.

On the 15th, the Indian Ministry of Health reported an increase of 200,739 new COVID-19 cases compared to the previous day. The total cumulative cases have risen to over 14.1 million.

The death toll increased by 1,038, bringing the total to 173,123. Following the previous day’s count exceeding 1,000 for the first time in six months since mid-October last year, the number remained in the four digits on this day as well.

Recently, the number of COVID-19 cases in India has surged dramatically. Continuously breaking daily records, India has overtaken Brazil to become the country with the second highest cumulative cases.

There are also projections that India could surpass the United States to become the country with the highest number of cases worldwide. On the previous day (local time), the U.S. reported 78,349 new cases. The recent daily new cases in the U.S. and Brazil have been in the 70,000 to 80,000 range, which is less than half of India’s figures.
