Raon People Selected as the Implementing Agency for the 'AI Convergence Illegal Copy Product Detection System Project'

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] AI specialist company Raon People announced on the 15th that it has been selected as the executing agency for the ‘AI Convergence Counterfeit Product Detection System Project,’ promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) as part of the Korean New Deal policy. Through this, it plans to support efficient customs clearance operations, including the Customs Service’s counterfeit product detection and inspection tasks, as well as blocking the domestic inflow of forged products.

Raon People will build an AI learning dataset for key inspection targets of counterfeit products such as automobile parts, IT products, home appliances, and beauty products, along with establishing a counterfeit product detection system using machine vision. After completing a demonstration test through AI learning data construction using genuine and counterfeit items provided by the Customs Service, the system will be deployed at enforcement sites.

According to the Customs Service, last year’s domestic import performance reached 520 trillion won, with 31.28 million import cases. The scale of counterfeit and fake goods traded through abnormal channels such as online and direct overseas purchases in the global market, not through official imports, exceeded 575 trillion won as of 2016 (OECD data), already surpassing domestic import performance, and is increasing by more than 10% annually, the company explained.

The Customs Service selected AI specialist company Raon People as the executing company for effective and efficient counterfeit product detection work and opened the ‘AI Counterfeit Product Detection Demonstration Lab’ with a total project cost of 22.7 billion won. The plan is to detect and identify counterfeit and illegal products using AI vision inspection technology.

By utilizing the AI convergence counterfeit product detection system, it is expected to efficiently improve related tasks by quickly and accurately distinguishing genuine and counterfeit products in four fields with many forgery cases, such as automobile parts, and fundamentally blocking their domestic entry. Furthermore, by significantly expanding the detection items in the future, the plan is to protect the rights of small and medium-sized enterprises and manufacturers who find it difficult to actively respond to design rights infringement products, prevent consumer damage, establish distribution order, and strengthen national industrial competitiveness.
