'Channel-Type Video Service' Samsung TV Plus
Expanding from Existing Smart TVs to Mobile Devices
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] Samsung Electronics is strengthening its media content services for its smartphone customers.
On the 15th, Samsung Electronics announced that it will expand the 'Samsung TV Plus' service, which was introduced through its smart TVs, to its mobile devices in South Korea.
Samsung TV Plus is a channel-based video service that allows users to enjoy various content such as movies, entertainment, news, sports, and children's programs for free by simply connecting the TV to the internet. Since its launch in 2015, it has been available in 14 countries as of the end of March.
By expanding the content experience enjoyed on TV to mobile, Samsung Electronics plans to enable mobile device users to enjoy content anytime and anywhere without restrictions on time and place, tailored to their preferences.
The Samsung TV Plus mobile app consists of three tabs: ▲Live ▲Recommended ▲My TV Plus, and currently offers 37 channels available for streaming anytime for free.
The 'Live' tab is categorized into genres such as ▲Recently Watched ▲News ▲TV Series ▲Entertainment ▲Sports ▲Lifestyle ▲Movies ▲Music ▲Children, allowing users to easily select desired content. The 'Recommended' tab provides recommended broadcast channels, movies, and various content along with recently watched channels, while the 'My TV Plus' tab offers functions to display and manage channels registered as favorites, scheduled channels, and currently watched channel lists.
To use the Samsung TV Plus service on mobile devices, users must download and install the app from the Galaxy Store or Google Play. Most devices running Android 8.0 OS or higher can use the service, but availability may be limited depending on device specifications. Devices with Android 8.0 OS or higher include most Galaxy A, M, and S series models.
Lee Won-jin, Vice President of the Service Biz Team at Samsung Electronics' Wireless Business Division, said, "The Samsung TV Plus mobile app is a new platform that allows convenient viewing of diverse content," adding, "We will continue to expand content to bring enjoyment to Galaxy users."
The Samsung TV Plus mobile app was first launched in the United States last September and was simultaneously released on the 15th of this month (local time) in South Korea, the UK, Germany, Canada, India, and other countries, with plans to continuously expand the service to more countries.
