[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] SK Hynix announced on the 15th that it has started mass production of the 'PE8110 E1.S,' an enterprise solid-state drive (SSD) product used in data centers. The product completed internal certification at the end of last month and has entered mass production. It is scheduled to be supplied to major customer data centers next month.

This enterprise SSD, based on 128-layer NAND, offers up to 88% faster read speeds and up to 83% faster write speeds compared to the previous generation 96-layer NAND-based product, the PE6110. This performance level allows storing a full HD movie of 4GB capacity in just one second. Additionally, the highest capacity model, the PE8110 8TB, can hold 2,000 movies on a single SSD.

SK Hynix explained, "While significantly improving product performance, we maintained power consumption at the same level as the previous generation to enhance energy efficiency," adding, "We have achieved industry-leading performance, capacity, and low-power competitiveness."

SK Hynix stated that with the mass production of this product, it has established a "complete lineup" of enterprise SSD products. In June 2019, SK Hynix succeeded in developing the world's first 128-layer 4D NAND. Since then, the company has developed and mass-produced three enterprise SSD products based on 128-layer NAND (SATA SE5110, PCIe Gen3 PE8111 E1.L, and PE8110 M.2).

SK Hynix explained, "A complete lineup means having all form factors (the product's shape, size, and physical arrangement) of enterprise SSD products based on 128-layer 4D NAND, including SATA, a serial interface for data transfer, and PCIe (E1.L, M.2, E1.S), a serial high-speed input/output interface used on digital device motherboards."

In particular, this product can be replaced while leaving the system intact, allowing the server to recognize it immediately. It also features a design improvement that reduces heat generation. Furthermore, SK Hynix emphasized that the warranty period has been extended from 3 years to 5 years, which can reduce operating costs for customer data centers.

Moreover, this product meets the OCP standard, an international consortium where major global data center companies participate to discuss hardware, software, and enterprise SSD standards for building ultra-high-efficiency data centers.

Lee Jaesung, Vice President of SK Hynix's Solution Product Development Division, said, "With this mass production, we have a complete product lineup that expands customers' options to replace hard disk drives (HDDs) with SSDs," adding, "SSDs, which have the advantage of low power consumption, can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 94% compared to HDDs, contributing to solving environmental issues and strengthening the company's ESG management."

Meanwhile, according to market research firm IDC, the enterprise SSD market has grown at an average annual rate of 21.5% since last year and is expected to reach a scale of 28 trillion won by 2024.
