[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced on the 15th that it has succeeded in developing a new ultra-small, high-capacity multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) product with the industry's highest performance, aiming to secure a leading position in the high-value IT MLCC market.
MLCC is a core component in electronic devices that controls the stable flow of current in electronic product circuits and is essential for related products such as smartphones, home appliances, and automobiles. Rated voltage, which indicates capacitance and durability to withstand high voltage, is the most important factor, and since more than 1,000 units are installed in devices like smartphones, smaller size increases competitiveness.
The product developed by Samsung Electro-Mechanics this time has dimensions of 0.4 mm width and 0.2 mm length (0402 size), with a capacitance of 1.0 microfarad (uF) and a rated voltage of 6.3V. This size corresponds to ultra-small products whose market demand has recently surged. Due to technological advancements such as 5G and multiple functions like multi-cameras, MLCCs that can endure large capacitance and high voltage in ultra-small sizes are essential. Samsung Electro-Mechanics explained that this product is "the world's first developed under these conditions."
Samsung Electro-Mechanics stated that through this development, it has been able to apply this size of ultra-small MLCC with 1.0uF high-capacity characteristics while increasing the rated voltage by 1.5 times (from 4V to 6.3V), making it applicable to various high-performance IT devices. The company also introduced that the product's DC bias characteristic, where capacitance decreases when DC voltage is applied, is at the industry's highest level, enhancing product lifespan and operational stability.
To secure a technological gap in the MLCC market, Samsung Electro-Mechanics formed a task force (TF) last year composed of experts in materials, processes, and equipment. To develop ultra-small, highest-capacity, and highest-voltage products, it developed and applied new technologies in many areas from materials to manufacturing and analysis. Through this, it secured nano (less than one-thousandth the thickness of a hair) fine powder processing technology to realize ultra-thin dielectric layers and introduced semiconductor process analysis techniques into the manufacturing process.
Kim Doo-young, Vice President and Head of the Component Business Division at Samsung Electro-Mechanics, said, "We can proactively respond to the rapidly increasing demands for ultra-small, high-performance, and high-reliability MLCCs due to the commercialization of 5G mobile communications, increased demand for electronic devices caused by non-face-to-face trends, and automotive electrification," adding, "Samsung Electro-Mechanics will secure a leading position in the market based on differentiated technological capabilities such as internalization of core raw materials and development of next-generation equipment."
Earlier, Samsung Electro-Mechanics stated at last month's shareholders' meeting, "In the MLCC sector, which is Samsung Electro-Mechanics' core business, we will further expand market share for IT use and lead product thinning technology, gradually increasing market share in automotive and industrial sectors as well."
