[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Choyoung] A man in his 20s who verbally abused and assaulted a paramedic after being informed that his father, injured from a fall, could be transferred to another hospital was sentenced to a suspended prison term.

According to the legal community on the 14th, the Incheon District Court Criminal Division 10 (Judge Yoon Seongheon) sentenced A (26), who was charged with violating the 119 Rescue and Emergency Medical Services Act and assault, to 6 months in prison with a 2-year suspension.

A was brought to trial for verbally abusing and assaulting paramedic B (30), affiliated with the fire station, at the emergency room entrance of a hospital in Incheon City at 11:01 p.m. on September 17 last year.

It was confirmed that A stated he committed the crime out of anger after hearing that his father, who was injured from a fall, might be transferred to another hospital due to COVID-19.

A was investigated to have verbally abused B and headbutted B's forehead while saying, "Hit me. Do you have a lot of money?" and struck B's chest with his elbow.

The court stated, "The defendant obstructed the rescue and emergency activities of paramedics who were trying to help his father, which is a serious offense," and added, "It appears that the victim suffered considerable psychological shock from this incident."

Furthermore, the court explained the sentencing reasons, saying, "He is a first-time offender who admitted to all charges and is showing remorse," and "Considering the circumstances where he lost his composure and caused a disturbance because his father, who was injured, could not enter the hospital emergency room due to COVID-19."
