Police Chief and Minister of Science Visit 'Gwahak Chian' Site... Join Hands to Expand Cooperation

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] Kim Chang-ryong, Commissioner of the National Police Agency, and Choi Ki-young, Minister of Science and ICT, visited a scientific policing site and agreed to expand the scope of cooperation between the two ministries to all areas of public safety.


On the afternoon of the 14th, Commissioner Kim and Minister Choi visited the Gwanak Police Station in Seoul, where the on-site demonstration of the "Visible 112 Emergency Call Support System" was taking place, confirmed the research results, and signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to expand cooperation between the two organizations.


Through this agreement, the two organizations decided to deepen and expand their cooperation from focusing on joint development of forensic science technologies and techniques to all areas of public safety.


The main contents include ▲ cooperation in research and development projects across all areas of public safety ▲ advancement of technologies in scientific policing by utilizing research outcomes in science, technology, and information and communications ▲ promotion of the public safety industry and creation of science and technology-based jobs through support for the practical application and commercialization of research and development results in the public safety field ▲ cooperation to build a research foundation in public safety by utilizing government-funded research institutes in the science and technology sector.


Commissioner Kim said, “We must now transform into a smart future police force that uses science and technology throughout public safety,” adding, “The expanded signing of this agreement will be a new starting point for the police organization to change toward the future and a significant opportunity to lay the foundation for a new blue ocean called the ‘public safety industry’ through the practical application and commercialization of research outcomes in the public safety field.”


Minister Choi also stated, “It is necessary to actively promote scientific policing by integrating advanced science, technology, and ICT capabilities into all police work to enhance public safety capabilities and ensure the public’s peace of mind and happiness,” and added, “I hope that the results of public safety research and development will spread throughout police work, be utilized in the field, and contribute to the safe lives of the people.”
