[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Russia has recently decided to suspend flights with Turkey again, considering the resurgence of COVID-19 cases.
On the 12th (local time), according to local media including TASS news agency, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana announced that all regular and charter flights with Turkey will be suspended from the 15th until June 1.
Russian health authorities have determined that COVID-19 variants are being imported into Russia from Turkey. Turkey is the second country, after the United Kingdom, for which Russia has declared a suspension of flights due to COVID-19 risks.
New COVID-19 cases in Turkey began to rise again since mid-last month, recently exceeding 50,000 cases per day.
Turkey is the most popular overseas tourist destination for Russians, with over 7 million Russians visiting Turkey annually before the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, it is reported that about 30,000 Russians are staying in Turkey for tourism purposes.
