Suncheon City Council Member Yoo Young-gap Urges Regular Employment Conversion for Hyundai Steel Illegal Dispatch Workers

Suncheon City Council Member Yoo Young-gap Urges Regular Employment Conversion for Hyundai Steel Illegal Dispatch Workers

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] The Suncheon City Council (Chairman Heo Yoo-in) urged immediate compliance with the administrative order to convert 516 illegally dispatched in-house workers at Hyundai Steel Suncheon Plant to regular employees during the 1st plenary session of the 250th extraordinary meeting held on the 13th.

According to Councilor Yoo Young-gap, who proposed the urging resolution, on February 10, the Gwangju Regional Employment and Labor Office of the Ministry of Employment and Labor issued a corrective order to Hyundai Steel Suncheon Plant, stating that “516 in-house subcontracted workers (including retirees) are being illegally dispatched as temporary workers and must be converted to regular employees.”

Regarding this, Councilor Yoo pointed out, “Although the Ministry of Employment and Labor instructed that in-house subcontracted workers are dispatched workers and that the illegality must be corrected, Hyundai Steel is requesting an additional month. Considering Hyundai Steel’s past behavior, this appears to be an intention not to comply with the corrective order.”

He continued, “Hyundai Steel should immediately comply with the Ministry of Employment and Labor’s corrective order, sincerely apologize to Hyundai Steel’s non-regular workers and the citizens of Suncheon for the past illegalities and exploitation, and fulfill its social responsibility as a large corporation.”

Furthermore, the government was urged not to focus solely on regularizing public sector workers but to prepare more fundamental solutions to the entrenched non-regular worker issues across South Korea’s industries.

Accordingly, the Suncheon City Council passed the urging resolution, calling for ▲ Hyundai Steel Suncheon Plant to immediately comply with the administrative order correcting illegal dispatch of non-regular workers ▲ the Minister of Employment and Labor (Gwangju Regional Employment and Labor Office Chief) to take measures to ensure Hyundai Steel Suncheon Plant immediately complies with the administrative order on illegal dispatch of non-regular workers ▲ the government and ruling party to immediately abolish the dispatch system, fixed-term employment, and layoff system that restrict all workers.

Meanwhile, the urging resolution passed at the plenary session will be sent to the President (Chief of Staff), the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, the CEO of Hyundai Steel, the Plant Manager of Hyundai Steel Suncheon Plant, the Minister of Employment and Labor, and the Chief of the Gwangju Regional Employment and Labor Office.
