Government Summons Japanese Ambassador Over Fukushima Contaminated Water Discharge Decision

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] On the 13th, the government summoned Koichi Aiboshi, the Japanese Ambassador to Korea, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strongly protest Japan's decision to discharge contaminated water from Fukushima into the ocean.

Choi Jong-moon, the 2nd Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, summoned Ambassador Aiboshi to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Doryeom-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, in the afternoon.

This was the first time the government summoned Ambassador Aiboshi, who took office in February.

Vice Minister Choi reportedly protested to Ambassador Aiboshi against Japan's decision to release radioactive contaminated water generated from the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident into the sea. It is expected that he urged transparent disclosure of information and verification throughout the entire process of treating the Fukushima nuclear power plant contaminated water.

Earlier, the Japanese government decided at a meeting of relevant ministers on the morning of the same day on the "Basic Policy on the Disposal of Treated Water," which includes plans to discharge contaminated water stored in tanks at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean.
