Suncheon City Holds Celebration Event for Suncheon Palmabi 'Treasure Designation'


[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) held a celebration event on the 13th at the South Gate Square of Suncheon Bueup Fortress to commemorate the elevation of the Suncheon Palmabi to Treasure No. 2122.


The event was held on a small scale with only key figures such as Mayor Heo Seok of Suncheon, Kim Hyun-mo, Commissioner of the Cultural Heritage Administration, and Congressman So Byung-chul attending to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It was also broadcast live on Suncheon City's official Facebook and YouTube channels for citizens who could not attend in person.


At the event, the unveiling ceremony of the Palmabi treasure information board took place, and Commissioner Kim Hyun-mo presented the treasure designation certificate of Palmabi to Mayor Heo Seok.


Following this, a congratulatory performance and a handprinting ceremony for a declaration of integrity were held. The main guests in attendance reaffirmed their commitment to integrity, and representatives from schools and organizations bearing the name "Palma" delivered messages of integrity, reflecting on the significance of Palmabi.


As a side event, a historical record exhibition on the Palma spirit was held.


Mayor Heo Seok of Suncheon stated, “The designation of Palmabi as a treasure signifies that the Palma spirit has been elevated beyond Suncheon to become a symbol of a fair society in the Republic of Korea, which fills me with immense value and pride. I want to share this joy with the 290,000 citizens of Suncheon and work together with them to bring forth more treasures and national treasures.”


Meanwhile, the Suncheon Palmabi is a stele erected to honor the integrity of Choi Seok, the Seungpyeong Busa (Governor of Seungpyeong), and is an important artifact representing the Suncheon region.


With its historical origin dating back to the 13th century and the current stele rebuilt in 1617 still standing, it has been recognized for its value with over 400 years of history and was designated as a treasure on the 25th of last month.
